S3 storage cost

Q & ACategory: StorageS3 storage cost

When we talk about the S3 storage cost per GB, is that like a one-time cost after you upload an object, or is it a recurring cost per month based on how long that object stays on S3? For example if I upload a large file to S3 and then delete it after a few days, how does the cost model work? Assume that no one read that file. It was uploaded, and after few days it was removed from S3.

As seen on the PPT slide for S3 cost in Module 5, this is recurring cost every month. All costs on AWS are recurring either on hourly basis or monthly. Even the monthly recurring ones are pro-rated down to the hour. A file stored on S3 will remain on it and keep costing you the same month on month till you delete it or transition it to another type of storage like Infrequent access or Glacier. As mentioned since the cost is pro-rated if you store and delete something before the end of the month, you are basically charged for the number of days/hours it was stored during that month, they call it Byte Hour pricing.

Roger that. The reason I asked the question is because when I was watching your video on S3 as part of the AWS Solutions Architect master class, all the slides showed the cost per GB but there was no mention about time as in per month, etc. Thanks for clarification!

Thank you for pointing that out. I will keep in mind to clarify that in future sessions. For now, just remember that unless explicitly mentioned like per hour or per sec, it would always be per month for any service.
